- Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals, are sent to an asylum on a remote island in order to investigate the disappearance of a patient, where Teddy uncovers a shocking truth about the place.
- This thoughtful, often fascinating featurette focuses on the film's psychiatric aspects and how consultant James Gilligan counseled the actors so they could better understand their reactions and motivations. We also learn about the controversial yet prevalent practice of lobotomizing violent mental patients, and how the more humane approach of pharma-psychology gradually replaced it around the time period in which the story takes place. The push-pull between the two methods is cogently examined, and once again, Scorsese, Lehane, and many cast members chime in with their impressions.
- A captivating piece, which only should be viewed after you watch the movie. All the principal actors join Scorsese to discuss the director's style (Ben Kingsley calls him "a painter"), his close collaboration with the cast, and the unique challenges the script posed to performers. Dennis Lehane, upon whose novel the film is based, shares his perspective, as well as his reasoning behind writing the book, while Scorsese discusses his musical philosophy for the picture, and the difficulties he faced during shooting so 'Shutter Island' could hold up upon subsequent viewings. Articulate comments abound in this well-produced and nicely paced piece.
- Jessie Reyez performs in the music video "Shutter Island" from the album "Kiddo" recorded for FMLY and Republic Records. The music video features Jessie Reyez singing as she stands in a glass box wearing a straight-jacket and chains. Later, it fills with water and she stays underwater.
- Michael Phillips and A.O. Scott review "The Ghost Writer", and "Shutter Island", and take a look back on the career of Martin Scorsese. The critics also reveal their picks for this year's Academy Award winners in the "Best Director" category in the "Out Pick the Critics" segment. In the "DVD Out Now" segment, Phillips and Scott recommend "A Serious Man", "The Informant", "The Damned United", "The Box", and "Everybody's Fine".
